The BBC reports on how Ireland’s most senior Catholic cleric, Cardinal Sean Brady is facing calls to resign. It!)has been reported that!)he attended meetings in 1975 in which children who had complained they were abused by a priest were asked to sign vows of silence.!)However the Cardinal has refused to resign, saying that!)he had reported what he had heard from victims to his bishop.At that time, the Cardinal was secretary to the bishop of Kilmore.Cardinal Brady said he had!)followed his bishop’s orders and that there were no guidelines for dealing with such investigations at that time.The writer cannot comment on the state of child protection in Eire, but in the United Kingdom during the seventies,!)prosecutions for child sexual abuse did take place.!)Social workers were not as aware as they are now, of the scale of the problem and the risk involved to children, but they had an awareness nonetheless.!)Coming back to Cardinal Brady, it is debatable what would have happened,!)had he reported the matter directly to the police and gone against his superior. The fate of such whistleblowers is not a happy one in the United Kingdom.!)However the writer’s experiences of cases against the!)Catholic Church is that it is not an organisation that!)is ideally placed to protect!)children and young people from sexual abuse. !)In addition, it seems to have huge difficulty getting to grips with the concept of responsibility when problems arise. Its religious foundation is not one that lends itself well to an open and transparent culture, particularly when modern child protection requires!)a high level of skill and expertise, where different agencies work together and share information.!)!)The Church would do well to look at the recent case of !)the women abused by their father, a Sheffield man. That was a case where a father had abused his daughters over a period of three decades, and the authorities gave them!)apologies for serial failures. However in relation to Cardinal Brady’s comments, one is left with the sense that this all happened a long time ago, and really we should move on. That will be easier for Cardinal Brady and his church, than those children abused by priests.The effect of all of this is a huge amount of anger directed at the church. There is also a financial cost, which no amount of prayers can avert. The writer has dealt with three such claim against the Catholic Church, all of which resulted in large amounts of damages and costs being paid either by insurers or by the church itself.!) In U.S. hospitals, resident doctors are frequently on call for more than 80 hours a week, and in the long-running and award winning medical drama, ER, we get a sense of this burden and strain. The hospital asks a lot of the characters in the Emergency Room, with the County General paging system constantly interrupting the lives of its staff and their pager tones and ruining their day.Their pagers wake them when they're catching forty winks on a gurney in an exam room after pulling an all night shift. Their pager alarms send them racing along the green hallways to save a life. Our favourite doctors, like John Carter, Mark Green, Abby Lockhart and Greg Pratt, are at the hospital paging system’s beck and call to the point that their pagers have even become essential to the drama.Paging Doctor CarterIn the second season, the intern Carter is elated to discover he has been nominated for his ‘match’ at County General, meaning he will be able to stay there for the next stage in his medical career. To celebrate, Carter jumps in a hot tub with a girlfriend and cracks open a bottle of champagne. That’s when their pagers bleep, calling them back to the hospital, but Carter is obviously tipsy and is unable to treat patients. For this transgression, he gets suspended.Carter has to confess “I can’t believe I was that stupid to sneak off and drink on call.”His loveable superior Mark Green then replies: “I can: you’re a medical student.”Kerry Weaver & AuthorityWe continually see both the ER staff’s dependency on, and dislike of, their pagers; but early in ER's eighth season there was an episode that shows how essential the paging systems are to the hierarchical chain of command in hospitals !) at least in the world of the cult TV show.Kerry Weaver is away from the Emergency Room dealing with personal issues, and when Doctors Chen and Malucci need her help and supervision over a failing patient, they bleep her pager over and over. Eventually Carter finds her in the cafe across the road, but it is too late and the patient dies. She then covers up her culpability by blaming her subordinates for the death. Malpractice suits, demotion, redundancies, and wrongful dismissal litigation then follow for the three doctors involved.Heart BreakerBut there is one scene - one of the most memorable in the whole fifteen years of the show - where something as mundane as wireless technology is used as a climax to a heart-rending episode. After a long, hard, “Night Shift” (1997), paramedics wheel in a patient in critical condition, a 'jumper' pulled from the Chicago railway lines.A nurse immediately gets on the hospital paging system to rouse the surgery staff covering the E.R.: Carter, Gant, and their superior, Dr Peter Benton. Benton quickly gets to work on the mauled body, which is so caked with blood that you can't tell the clothes from the flesh. The room is noisy with agitated voices, frantic activity and the electronic tones of the machines. Carter rushes in to assist, but his troubled friend Gant does not show promptly and so Benton is quick to admonish his least-favoured intern.'Page him again', and that's when, in all the clamour of the Emergency Room, they begin to notice a ringing tone. One by one, they pause to locate the sound, and in that moment of stillness, a nurse pulls a ringing pager from the pocket of the suicide victim. The pager's tone had been ringing for minutes unheard, and as it is silenced we learn that Dr Benton's vindictive and sustained bullying of his overworked intern Gant, has had a fatal outcome. Chilling stuff.

Two other blacklisted countries, North Korea and Syria, are not affected by the decision because their sanctions do not currently rule out the export of Internet services.In the chaotic days after the June election in Iran, the State Department asked Twitter to put off maintenance of its global network, which would have cut off service to Iranians using it to swap information and tell the world about antigovernment protests. The administration’s move will not deprive the Iranian authorities of the ability to clamp down on the Internet, as happened in February, when service was constricted so heavily that Iranians had difficulty accessing Gmail accounts and organizing protests before the 31st anniversary of the Iranian Revolution. But by offering Iranians more options, the official said, it will force the authorities in Iran to plug more holes.“We want to make sure the information flows,” he said. “It will obviously have political implications in a range of ways.”The administration’s blanket waiver does not apply to encryption and other software that makes it harder for the authorities to track people’s Internet activity. 2010年3月8日(月)人民元は、2008年中半以来対ドルで実質的に固定化されてきたが、米国はオバマ大統領を先頭に,人民元の切り上げを求めて強い圧力をかけつづけている。これに対して中国側はふたつのトーンの異なる信号(mixed signals)を週末に連続して発信した。ひとつは金曜日の全人代における「合理的な均衡水準における人民元レートの基本的安定を保つ」との温家宝首相の演説である。今ひとつは、中国人民銀行周小川総裁が、翌土曜日の記者会見において「レートは各種の経済指標に基づいて機動的に調整する必要がある」と述べたことである。温家宝首相の人民元に関する発言は、「内需拡大、物価上昇率3%、8%成長の目標を達成しながらバブル発生の抑制を図る」という経済政策パッケージのコンテクストの中で行われたものであるが、この「合理的な均衡水準における人民元レートの基本的安定を保つ」との人民元部分は、従来の「切り上げ圧力には屈しない」という首相発言の繰り返しであり、いわば「情報量ゼロ」である。一方、その翌日の中央銀行総裁発言は人民元切り上げ問題に大きく踏み込んだ発言となった。Financial Timesによると、この中銀総裁発言は、「（人民元レートの対ドル固定は）世界の金融危機への対処の一環として取られた政策である。早晩、脱却する意思を持っている」“This is a part of our package of policies for dealing with the global financial crisis. I just read the most recent errata for all the books.It made some pretty major changes…Do you like the direction WotC is taking with the errata?Stuff I like about it:-clarification for weapon/implement rules-clarification for damage types vs. keywords(Although I am not sure this is a good rule, at least there is one.)Stuff I don’t like:-Expertise is now a feat bonus (It did not really fix anything. It just makes things more bland since there is one superior option and other flavorful by inferior ones.)I don’t like expertise in any case (I am houseruling the bonus) so does not really matter.-Small random things that don’t really matter.Indifferent about:-Orbizard nerf (We never had an orbizard in any game so far.)-Save penalty nerf (Seems like most save penalties only work on the first save of a power. I think the orbizard nerf was enough, this may be a bit too much.)Just to kick off some rules debate here, since it is so quiet…I still remember when we used to discuss the rules a lot more here, but I suppose most people are just playing and dealing with the things without many changes?And a few questions to someone with the DDi subscription:-Can you force things in character builder (like houseruled bonuses on top of the regular ones?)-Can you install the character builer on two computers? I’d like one for the laptop and one for my home pc.
