entry.11 Lying and Cheating to Pass ObamaCare
Now that the feel good politics of the Blair House bipartisan Summit is over, the left is gearing up to lie and cheat their way to victory.!) Now!)claim!)may be!)bold, yet it is objectively true.!) The left!)is lying about the American people’s opinions on ObamaCare and they are cheating to get the bill passed.!) The next few weeks will determine whether the!)American people get ObamaCare!)passed against their will with no opportunity for!)a minority!)number of Members of Congress to protect the will of a majority of Americans. The big lie the left will try and peddle over the next few weeks is that!)the American people want!)ObamaCare.!) The fact of the mater is that the American people have soundly rejected government run ObamaCare and the left will attempt to manipulate polling data to argue that the American people like elements of the President’s approach.!) Peter Fenn writes for The Hill:If you listen to some of the Republican rhetoric on the public’s view of health care, repeated over and over, you would come to the conclusion that the American people are not solidly behind change in the system. Clever manipulation. In fact, what the American people hate is the lack of progress, the incessant back-and-forth, the gridlock. What the American people hate is watching the sausage being made, the side deals and horse trading, the refusal of the two parties to get together and pass a bill, the simple lack of action. Right now, 59 percent of Americans believe that the delays in passing a bill are more due to both sides playing politics and only 25 percent think it is more about Republicans and Democrats having policy disagreements. The left would love you to ignore the polling date and argue that because the American people don’t like obstruction and gridlock in D.C., they love ObamaCare.!) This ignores the Massachusetts special election for Senate this past January where a candidate, State Senator Scott Brown, won on a campaign to go to Washington to obstruct and filibuster ObamaCare.!) Furthermore, it ignores a fact I cited in a previous ObamaCare post that every single poll indicates that Americans oppose the President’s plan.(from a prior post) Quick reality check from Real Clear Politics Polls on ObamaCare!)(From 1/20-2/22 the average ObamaCare poll is 38.4 support and 52.3 oppose it for an average ObamaCare deficit of 13.9%):Rasmussen Reports!)- 41% Support - 56% OpposeNewsweek!)- 40% - 49%Pew Research!)- 38% - 50%ABC News/Wash Post!)- 46% - 49%Quinnipiac!)- 35% - 54%Ipsos/McClatchy!)- 37% - 51%NBC News/Wall St. Jrnl!)- 31% - 46%CNN/Opinion Research!)- 38% - 58%NPR - POS/GQR!)- 39% - 55%USA Today/Gallup!)- 39% - 55%Fenn also argues that elements of ObamaCare are popular, therefore the plan as a whole must be popular.!) He uses polling data from the Kaiser Family Foundation!)to claim that people support elements of the plan.76 percent support reforming the way health insurance works72 percent support tax credits for small businesses71 percent support creating a health insurance exchange/marketplace70 percent support expanding high risk insurance pools68 percent support providing financial help for low-/middle-income people!)The problem is that according to this same poll, the same amount of people who support the bill oppose the bill.!) Furthermore, they attribute hatred of ObamaCare as one element of the Scott Brown victory, validating conservatives argument that the Brown victory was a defeat for ObamaCare.!) This poll looked at opponents of ObamaCare and found that the following three issues were a “major reason” for opposing the bill:We can’t afford to pay for health care reform right now (73%);The legislation gives government too big a role in the health care system (80%); and,Too much of the process took place behind closed doors and involved too much deal-making (73%).Any way you slice it, ObamaCare is unpopular.!) People don’t like the core of this bill — a government run health care system that is too expensive and was crafted behind closed doors. The liberals are cheating when they claim that!)Reconciliation is not the Nuclear Option.!) Reconciliation is being used by the left because they can’t pass ObamaCare through the regular order.!) They want to rid the Senate of the filibuster and the reconciliation procedure, the Health Care Nuclear Option, is a means to get what they could not get when they followed the rules.!) Lefties at The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities claim:Because rising health care costs represent the single largest cause of the federal government’s long-term budget problems, fundamental health care reform must be part of any budget solution. The foregoing examples indicate that using the budget reconciliation process to enact health reform in 2010 would be consistent with the ways in which Congress has used reconciliation in the past. Many major policy changes, including welfare reform, large tax cuts, and new health programs, have been included in past reconciliation bills. Moreover, if health reform is pursued through the reconciliation process this year, the resulting legislation — unlike the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 — will need to be designed so it does not add to the deficit. Any legislation also is likely to include provisions, such as an independent Medicare Commission and demonstration projects to identify ways to deliver health care more efficiently, that could lead to further reforms that slow the growth of health-care costs and contribute to longer-term deficit reduction.Reconciliation is unprecedented and unusual for a few reasons.!) First, the left is using reconciliation, the ObamaCare Nuclear Option, as a procedure of last resort to get ObamaCare passed.!) It would be interesting for the left to produce other bills that have failed during the use of the regular order for a bill, necessitating Congress to resort to reconciliation.!) ObamaCare passed the House in November and the Senate on Christmas Eve, yet they are resorting to reconciliation because they know they can’t get one Republican to support the President’s health care bill in the Senate.!)Second, reconciliation has never been used to amend a bill that has yet to pass.!)!)The Health Care Nuclear Option will be used to pass!)a new bill that amends the Senate passed version of ObamaCare.!) Finally, reconciliation has not traditionally been used to steamroll the will of the American people.!) The bipartisan Blair House Summit was merely some feel good politics before the real effort by Democrats to jam an unpopular ObamaCare bill through Congress using a the procedural Nuclear Option.!) The American people should take note that Washington continues to view their opposition with contempt and politicians would like you to believe that they know what is best for America.!)Your federally elected officials are telling you right now — You shall get ObamaCare, whether you like it or not.

entry.14 Obama plans last healthcare push as summit turns testy
!) Republican calls to start from scratch rejected!) Barbed words with McCain reflect polarised meetingBarack Obama is planning a last-ditch effort to get his health reform bill through by the end of March after a tense and polarised summit yesterday of Democratic and Republican members of Congress.Although the president appealed to Republicans to work jointly with the Democrats on reform, there was little sign of the two parties closing the gap that still separates them.Broadcast live on television, the summit at Blair House in Washington was billed by the White House as an attempt to secure bipartisan agreement over health reform after a year of bickering. But Obama rejected calls by the Republicans to scrap existing plans and start from scratch.Reflecting the polarisation between the two parties, there was undisguised animosity in testy exchanges between Obama and John McCain, his Republican rival in the 2008 presidential race. The senator protested about backroom deals in a Senate version of the bill. Obama interrupted him, saying: "We are not campaigning any more. The election is over."McCain, exposing the rawness of that defeat, replied: "I am reminded of that every day."Another Republican senator, John Barrasso, dismissed the summit as "political theatre". About 40 Democratic and Republican members of Congress joined Obama for the summit. But such is the divide between the two parties that they even argued beforehand about the shape of the table they would sit at, rejecting a U-shaped one for a rectangular formation. They also bickered throughout the summit about how much time each side was being given.Opening the session, Obama pleaded for a bipartisan approach to health reform. "Unfortunately, over the course of the year, despite all the hearings that took place and all the negotiations that took place … this became a very ideological battle," he said. "It became a very partisan battle. And politics I think ended up trumping practical common sense." He personalised the debate, talking of when his daughters Malia and Sasha had been ill and when his mother died.Obama called for a proper discussion, not just trading political points. "I hope that this isn't political theatre where we're just playing to the cameras and criticising each other, but instead are actually trying to solve the problem," he said. But it looks like he will have to try to push the legislation through with Democrats alone. The two leading congressional Democrats, House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate leader Harry Reid, have told Obama he has until the Easter recess to get the bill through. After that, with members of Congress facing mid-term elections in November, they would have to turn their attention to other issues, primarily jobs and the economy. The president is proposing sweeping reform of the failing US health system which would cost an estimated $950bn (£624bn) and expand insurance coverage to a further 31 million Americans. The Republicans oppose a comprehensive approach, suggesting instead a series of small steps that would cost $61bn and extend insurance to 3 million. The Republican senator Lamar Alexander called on the Democrats to start again. "Our view, with all respect, is that this is a car that can't be recalled and fixed, and that we ought to start over," he said.Alexander added that comprehensive bills did not work for the US. "Our country is too big, too complicated, too decentralised … That sort of thinking works in the classroom but it doesn't work very well in our big, complicated country."He challenged the Democrats, if they were serious about bipartisanship, to renounce plans to ram the bill through. The Democrats pointedly refused to do so. Under a process called reconciliation, they plan to have the house vote on a version of the healthcare reform bill passed by the Senate on Christmas Eve. This will require a second bill which could include points sought by the house and others set out by Obama. The convoluted legislative process is to prevent the Republicans from using filibuster tactics in the Senate. Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, said: "I think there are the [Democratic] votes to pass healthcare reform."If that fails, the White House has a plan B, a drastically scaled down set of proposals for health reform that would fall far short of Obama's original hopes. The one small area on which there was agreement yesterday was Obama embracing a Republican plan to set up an exchange system whereby customers could compare the costs of health insurance plans, similar to checking for the lowest airline fares on the internet.US healthcareBarack ObamaUnited StatesUS domestic policyEwen MacAskillguardian.co.uk© Guardian News&Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to ourTerms&Conditions|More Feeds

entry.18 Scott Brown to Joe Biden: Don’t lecture me on military law
The week is not starting off on a good note for the VP. First, former Veep Dick Cheney yesterday blasted various Obama admin counterterrorism arguments Biden has been making on the past couple of weeks on issues like Iraq and the so-called “Christmas Day bomber,” and now, Biden has Senator Scott Brown ( R -MA!) to contend with : Sen. Scott Brown thinks Vice President Joe Biden was “off base” when he suggested Sunday that the Massachusetts Republican get his facts straight on the legal procedures for military tribunals. “It was insulting,” said Brown, who frequently jabbed the administration during his Senate campaign for giving suspected terrorists legal representation. On CBS’s “Face the Nation” last weekend, Biden shot back that he doesn’t “know whether the new senator from Massachusetts understands: When you get tried in a military tribunal, you get a lawyer, too.” “He’s trying to give me a lesson on military law, and I didn’t think it was appropriate,” Brown told POLITICO.

It’s not just America’s past time, it is an escape from the monotony of daily life, from politics, and from life’s little encumbering affairs that bog us down. But Barack Obama will have none of it.Like last year, this year Barack Obama made sure to disrupt the pre-game show with an interview just to make sure we all knew, if we didn’t pay attention to any of the other press conferences he has had in the past week, that he is there. It is a bit funny. The real God is a more active, yet more invisible, presence in all of our lives, from the beating of our hearts, to the rain that wets the soil, but he does not feel the need to do press conferences every other day to make sure we know he is still in charge? What is it with Obama that compels him to get in our faces at the times we most want to escape politics — regardless of party — to have an interview with Katie Couric. Perhaps they, both pro-abortion advocates, felt the need to subtly balance out Pam Tebow. In the secular world, the government takes the place of God — standing in for social services in place of the church, standing in for worship in place of fixation on a deity, etc. In the third world, the Dear Leader also makes sure to put his face everywhere so all can venerate him everywhere. Thus we become a third world nation. Please click here for the rest of the post.2. Sarah Palin: Authentic and on the MoneyGovernor Sarah Palin took to the stage at the National Tea Party Convention on Saturday night and hit it out of the park. She hit all the notes perfectly. She threw in some great lines. But above all else, she proved herself authentic, sincere, and in touch with conservatives and independents. You can see the whole speech here. As Andrew Malcolm noted, she started by recognizing Ronald Reagan’s birthday, which was the day of her speech.Governor Palin offered a full throated endorsement of the tea party movement, a movement that has seen as much hatred and scorn from the media and both political parties’ establishments as the Governor herself. She said, “The Republican Party would be really smart to start trying to absorb as much of the Tea Party movement as possible” and also said Republicans should not be afraid of primaries. Here’s the thing — and it is what I mentioned the other day. Sarah Palin’s history in politics is of not a reformer in general, but of a house cleaner. She has, in every job she has held, rooted out corruption and cleaned up the place. Please click here for the rest of the post.I’ve got some additional thoughts on the Tea Party Convention, which I sneaked up to so I could see it myself, here.3. White House Counterterrorism Chief John Brennan Tries Implicating RepublicansIf Barack Obama hoped to calm people down over the panty-bomber incident, he just failed massively. Sunday morning, White House Counterterrorism Chief John Brenan tried to get the Republicans to share in the blame. Not only did it not work, but the Republicans are coming forward to say Brennan is totally full of it and are mad as all get out. Please click here for the rest of the post.4. Sen. Kit Bond makes Robert Gibbs cryThis week, Missouri’s Senator Kit Bond massively pwned Obama Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.Last week, Gibbs revealed in a press conference that the FBI had been receiving more cooperation from The Christmas Pantybomber (Umar Farouq) Abdulmutallab. Senator Bond is the ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee and received this information from FBI leadership. According to Bond, the FBI instructed the committee to not disclose Abulmutallab’s cooperation. But Gibbs did just that. Please click here for the rest of the post.5. Obama Installs Democratic Activist, Fundraiser in U.S. Attorney PostPresident Barack Obama Friday tapped Democratic National Committee member Tim Purdon as North Dakota’s next United States Attorney, landing the president in the same political minefield once occupied by Democratic Senator Max Baucus after he nominated his girlfriend for a similar federal post.A veteran Democratic bundler, Purdon found a unique affinity with trial lawyer John Edwards, on whose campaign he was a state chairman. According to his firm, Purdon specializes in criminal defense and personal injury lawsuits and possesses no prosecutorial experience, for which the White House is making no bones. It is, after all, within the purview of the President to appoint persons to fill the 93 U.S. Attorney posts, even persons politically aligned with the administration, but most have at least some prosecutorial experience. While the White House’s website did not include Purdon’s name among other pending nominations and appointments as of Friday morning, the entire North Dakota Congressional delegation!)all Democrats!)issued congratulatory statements. Please click here for the rest of the post.6. Daniels Led Bayh by 10 in NRSC Poll, Not Asked to RunIndiana Governor Mitch Daniels today promised to remain neutral in his state’s upcoming Republican Senate primary, but admitted to being “startled” by Coats’ surprise candidacy.Former Senator Dan Coats is “just alarmed about the country, I can tell you that from talking to him,” Daniels said of Coats, who contacted the governor Monday about his potential challenge to Democratic Senator Evan Bayh. Many Republicans criticized Coats’ candidacy as a recruiting failure for the NRSC, seemingly buttressed by Daniels’ admission today that, despite leading Bayh by 10 percentage-points in internal polling by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, he was not approached about running.Daniels, who many are hoping will consider a 2012 presidential bid, said he was also unsure who courted Coats. Please click here for the rest of the post.7. Science, not Evangelism: India quits IPCCNow that word has spread that the works and sources of the International Panel on Climate Change are neither “peer reviewed” nor based on “peer reviewed” publications, here come the consequences and loss of credibility. India is quitting the IPCC, and the quote from Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh is just beautiful:“There is a fine line between climate science and climate evangelism. I am for climate science.”Please click here for the rest of the post.
