entry.1 Is the music industry trying to write the digital economy bill?
The mess of the digital economy bill suggests that the record industry thinks it's better to get influence than popularityTwo weeks is a lifetime in politics !) especially in the political life of the backwards digital economy bill, Labour's gift to the incumbent entertainment industries that government is bent on ramming into law before the election. In mylast column, I bore the bizarre news that the LibDem front-bench Lords had introduced an amendment to the bill that would create a Great Firewall of Britain. This would be a national censorwall to which the record industry could add its least favourite sites, rendering them invisible to Britons (except for those with the nous of a 13-year-old evading her school's censorware). Over the following days, the story got weirder: theLibDem amendment got amended, to add a figleaf of due process to the untenable proposal. And then it got weirder still: aleaked memo from the BPI(the UK record industry lobby) showed that the "LibDem amendment" had in fact been written !) with minor variances !) by the BPI. And the BPI continued to leak: someone sent me theweekly internal status update prepared by Richard Mollet, BPI Director of Public Affairs for the core group of plotters behind the bill (someone should teach Mr Mollet about BCC). In the memo, Mollet !) himself a prospective Labour parliamentary candidate for the next election !) admits that the only reason that the digital economy bill has a hope of passing is that MPs are "resigned" to voting on it without debate. Translation: if MPs got to debate the bill, they would tear it to unrecognisable pieces as they realised what terrible rubbish it really is.Andthen, thenextday, Bridget Fox, a LibDem prospective parliamentary candidate who had spoken out against her party's new pro-censorship stance, introduced anemergency motion to the LibDems' spring conference. This motion called for the LibDems to follow a policy that puts internet freedom front and centre, categorically rejecting web censorship and disconnection of infringers and their families, and embracing net neutrality and all the other freedoms that you'd expect from the "party of liberty". In other words, the LibDems had declared themselves to be not biddable by the entertainment industry, and indirectly but firmly rebuked the Lords who'd done the BPI's dirty work for them.By all accounts, the "debate" following Fox's proposal was a one-sided affair. No one came forward to oppose it. Instead, for half an hour, speaker after speaker stood up to declare the importance of a free and open net. When the vote came, it was near-unanimous (I hear that there was one vote against the proposal). If the BPI had hoped to have an ally for the years to come in the LibDems, they blew it by asking for too much !) and getting it. Their greed in exploiting their influence over the LibDem Lords galvanised the LibDem rank and file into enshrining a rejection of the BPI's agenda into the party's official policy. The scene reminded me of the inception of Sweden's Pirate Party, in the wake of a high profile raid on the data-centre that housed The Pirate Bay's servers. The police there acted illegally, taking instruction directly from a minister who was getting his own marching orders from the US entertainment lobby. The Pirate Bay was briefly taken offline before springing up on new servers. But the hundreds of other, legitimate sites that were taken down in the same raid weren't so lucky. The abuses of that raid !) punishing the innocent, using the police as private enforcement goons for an offshore corporate cartel !) turned Swedes from people who downloaded a little copyrighted music because it was convenient into militants who saw a duty to take down the entertainment companies before they wrecked Swedish democracy. Here's the thing I can't work out: are these entertainment cartel overshoots the result of arrogance, or are they calculated losses? Is the BPI willing to turn the LibDems from an ally into an enemy if they can get a couple of amendments into the digital economy bill? Was it worth burning this bridge just to move the goalposts on censorship by a few inches? Or did they really believe that there would be no consequences for their actions?I try to credit them with the "calculated loss" theory when I can, but the evidence really points to an unrealistic view of the world born of the arrogance of power. After all, how else to explain the BPI's contention (in the leaked secret status update) that MI5 may be responsible for the opposition to its plans to undermine Britain's global IT competitiveness, the rule of law, free speech and innovation (MI5 is said to be worried that monitoring online activity will get harder when people take up tools to evade copyright enforcement)? It really seems like record execs find it easier to believe that their opposition is being propped up by a cabal of spies than that the people of Britain really just don't want to be spied upon, harassed, and deprived of fundamental liberties in order to give a small clutch of entertainment companies slightly higher profits.InternetDigital BritainPolitics and technologyCory Doctorowguardian.co.uk© Guardian News&Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to ourTerms&Conditions|More Feeds

entry.2 Obama Gets Lucky With New Votes
On St. Patrick’s Day Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio) voiced his support to vote yes on the health care bill, reports the Washington Post. Kucinich previously opposed the bill because it “would perpetuate the for-profit insurance system.” Another Democrat, Rep. Dale E. Kildee (Mich.), previously opposed the bill because of abortion provisions. And he isn’t the only anti-abortionist who supports Obama’s health care reform: 59,000 nuns declared their support for the legislation. Their letter claims the bill “‘will uphold longstanding conscience protections and it will make historic new investments . . . in support of pregnant women.’” Opposition to the bill is still strong, according to the New York Times. House Republican leader Rep. John A Boehner (Ohio) said the party will continue to put pressure on Democrats and that they would have to choose between voting with the president or voting with constituents. With the vote potentially taking place this Sunday, Democrats still haven’t nailed down the required 216 votes needed for passage of the bill and, according to the Wall Street Journal, still need 10 votes. Fiscally conservative Democrats are waiting for the new budget, which was being revised Wednesday, before choosing how to vote. A change was made to the tax on high-value plans and how “the tax’s threshold would change over time.”The president has a busy week. President Obama met with potential votes for his health care bill and now the $18 billion jobs bill is expected to finally land on his desk Thursday, reports the Washington Post. The bill took a long road to Obama’s signature; after it was passed by the Senate, the House made some changes and the Senate had to vote on it a second time. This time 11 Republicans joined the Democrats present for the vote. For the rest of 2010 companies hiring anyone unemployed for over 60 days would get a break paying their Social Security taxes. In addition, for each of those workers who stay employed for over a year, the company gets a $1,000 tax credit. Although the bill was an achievement in bipartisanship, there critics with two very different stances. Some wonder “whether the legislation is big enough to make a dent in the nation's persistent unemployment problem” and Republicans believe the bill is more debt than anything else.Although bailouts for the big banks will be linked to the recession, the smaller banks are the ones lagging on repaying bailout funds, reports the Washington Post. All of the largest nine banks have repaid the money, but “hundreds of community banks have yet to return their bailouts.” According to Linus Wilson, a finance professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, there were $78.1 million in missed payments February. The large banks may have been blamed for the recession, but the small ones are still feeling the sting of it.Small banks were proposed on Monday to be taken away from the Federal Reserve’s regulatory power, and now chairman Ben Bernanke explained to the House Financial Services Committee that it would be a bad idea, according to the New York Times. The more than 5,000 smaller banks would go to other regulators while the Fed keeps responsibility of only those banks with $50 billion or more in assets. This would leave on 35 banks under the Fed’s watch. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City President Thomas Hoenig sided with Bernanke saying that the Fed is “‘not the central bank of Wall Street. It’s the central bank of the United States.” The new proposal would focus the Fed’s power on New York and Washington. With the iPad’s ship date less than a month away, Amazon (AMZN) isn’t pulling punches with publishers anymore, reports the New York Times. The company is threatening to stop selling some publishers’ books online unless they agree to concessions. Amazon is trying to keep prices low and just over a month ago it removed the “buy” option from MacMillan books when the publisher pressure Amazon.com about raising book prices. Amazon sees some publishers’ prices as “‘needlessly high.’” Meanwhile Apple (AAPL) reached an agreement with five of the largest publishers to sell e-books of new adult fiction and nonfiction at $12.99-$14.99. Amazon’s approach makes it necessary for publishers to sign three-year contracts, which they are hesitant to do in the rapidly changing digital book world. No one knows how they’ll need to adjust in the time it takes for the contract end.

Candlesticks and CondosA nor'easter blew in on Saturday night and left us without electricity for two days and two nights. It left us in the cold and dark without the ‘benefit' of television, internet or even movies on demand. What it did leave us with was flashlights, candles, a burning fireplace and time to talk. At first, our conversation centered on what was missing (the aforementioned television, etc.), but soon it centered on the many blessings in our lives; our health, our children, the fact that no trees had crashed into our home. It was wonderful that we could just sit and talk by the light of the fireplace, all bundled up on the couch and just exchange thoughts, ideas and laugh. It was truly meaningful and has carried beyond the return of electricity. What does this have to do with behavioral economics, money and how it impacts our lives? Well, it actually is quite directly related. While our minds are being tempted and distracted by financial institutions' promises of financial nirvana and our hearts are being swayed by the dulcet tones of what car to buy, clothes to wear, food to eat, vacation to take; we are being pulled apart from that which truly makes us happy. Is it fair to say that we are so distracted by the complexities life, family, work and the ‘shoulds' that we do not take the time to think about what we truly value. If not for the televisions' constant pounding of product, style, flare or definition of success, we wouldn't know what to think or what we need to do in order to be ‘successful'. But remove all that noise and you might discover something very interesting. You might discover that your definition of happiness is not the same as "the worlds' most interesting man", that babies don't really know how to buy stock, that it's not "better in the Bahamas" (warmer perhaps) and that screaming pundits who throw things, blow whistles and act crazy don't really know anything more about creating wealth than anyone else. You might discover that within the space of quiet moments, where only the crackling of the fire serves as soundtrack, that hopes and dreams can be discussed and thoughts and ideas created. Once the idea that each of us has the opportunity and the responsibility to create our own definition of success, we are on the way to developing something very important and real. If we remain under the yoke of marketing messages, peer pressure and the money messages we carry from childhood, we are destined to struggle to find our truth and our real success.I met with a couple, several years ago; they were financially successful in that they had created a substantial amount of wealth. Both spouses were high paid executives and they were just about finished raising their family. When we discussed what their life after work looked like to them, they had obviously done their homework and knew very clearly what they wanted to do. Their desire was to spend the first several years in retirement as docents in National Parks, where they would live in cabins and tents and give tours. While this couple could certainly do a Ritz-Carlton worldwide tour, this was not in alignment with their thinking or values. They wanted their life to be simple, in nature and together.Several weeks ago, I met with a client who defined success as being able to have and maintain two residences, one of which needed to be a condo in Boca Raton. Unless he could make that happen, he would consider his life a financial failure. I sat and listened to this statement of ‘fact' without reaction or comment. He continued on, saying how ALL of his friends were able to do so and he saw no reason, regardless of his specific financial condition, why he couldn't count himself among the ranks of his successful friends. I continued to listen to him explain this essential aspect of his definition of success. He suddenly shifted his position and began to tell me of the necessity of being close to his family and seeing his grandchildren grow. Wow, was there inner conflict there or what? First, the message of ‘success' as defined by others, and then the grounded heart-felt desire to be around his family. Meanwhile, his wife sat taking in the scene without comment, but the body language was shouting her disapproval at having to maintain two households, and that there was little she cared more about other than keeping her family close. Other people's definition of success just didn't matter to her. At this point of the meeting, I suggested that they go home, unplug the television, turn on the fireplace and talk about it. **********************************************************************************My name is Michael F. 「"Dark" redirects here. For others uses, see Dark (disambiguation), absence of light. For other used, see Darkness (disambiguation)。Darkness (also called lightlessness) is the absence of light. Scientifically it is only possible to have a reduced amoutn of light. The emotional response to an absence of light has inspired metaphor in literature, symbolism in art and emphasis。Artiscally, darkness can also be used to emphasize or contrast with light。Colors paints are mixed together to create darkness, because each color absorbs certain frequencies of light. Theoretically, mixing together the three primary colors, or the three seconday colors, will absorb all visible light and create black. In practice it is difficult to prevent the mixture from taking a brown tint。The color of a pint, on a standart 24-bit computer display, is defined by three numers between 0 and 255, one each for red, green and blue. Because the absence of ligh creates darkness, darker colors are closer to...

entry.7 6 Effective Tips On How To Buy The Most Ideal Photo Printer
Everyone needs a photo printer, since these days a lot of people are taking more photos than they can afford to print. Some photo printing services require one to have a minimum of a certain number of pictures. What if one needs only to print one or two and it does not meet the minimum? That’s why it really helps to have your own photo printer. You can save a lot of money from printing-related expenses that way. The initial investment may be quite hard on the pocket, but you will realize later on that the money you spent buying the photo printer is generally less than what you will be spending in printing photos later on. Since it is an investment, it is important that you choose only the right photo printer for you. Here are some tips as to how you can do that: 1. Know what you really need. Photo printers are used for a wide variety of purposes, aside from printing pictures. Others, specifically the large format printers, can be used for printing tarpaulins. As a buyer, you need to know what you need so that you will also know which photo printer is right for you. 2. Know how much you can spend for the photo printer. You also need to have a budget that you can work with. With this information, you can start narrowing your choices to just a few photo printers. That way, you won’t have to deal with a lot of clutter that you otherwise will not need. 3. Do your research. Now that you have a budget and some clear information on what you need from the photo printer. You need to do careful research on the many different models so that you can decide which one you would want to buy. Find out what their features are, so you can know if they can fit your needs. 4. Read reviews. Once you’ve decided on a brand and model, the next thing you should find out is whether or not the model performs as it promises it would. The only way you can do that is to check out printer reviews from many review sites. Third-party reviews are always the best as they are derived from the writer’s personal experiences with the product. 5. Find good deals. Once you’ve decided on a specific model, now is the time for you to find good deals for the product. With the abundance of e-commerce sites in the Internet these days, it is possible to find the cheapest deals possible when shopping in the web. Look around carefully. Fortunately, it is easy to do that with the Internet. 6. Make sure there is a warranty included. Don’t just buy blindly without checking the warranty terms, as well as the terms for returning the product if there is a defect. These provisions protect you from making the wrong investment on a unit that is otherwise defective and does not work as planned.Read more on 6 Effective Tips On How To Buy The Most Ideal Photo Printer…
